This is a list of stop-motion films from around the world organised in order of release date; theatrical releases as well as made-for-TV and direct-to-video movies. This list is divided into three major sections. Films that have stop-motion animation in at least 75% of their running time, or have at least 40 minutes of animation in total, would go into the "Stop-motion-animated feature films" section. Films like the 1933 King Kong, which rely significantly on stop-motion for special effects but consist mostly of live action footage would go into the "Stop-motion/live action features" section. Award-winning short films with stop-motion animation in at least 75% of their running time would go into the "Award-winning stop-motion shorts" section.

This list chooses to use the BFI, AMPAS and AFI definitions for the minimum length of a feature film, which is 40 minutes.

For films made using puppetry (in other words, using puppets but not animation), please go here.

This film, television or video-related list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it.

[edit] Stop-motion/live action features

[edit] Borderline

These are the borderline films which are likely almost entirely animated, but have a live-action main character (or characters) moving through the stop-motion-animated landscapes (at the very least, this is the case for a large portion of the film). What differentiates these from the category below is that here the live-action characters are part of the animated world, rather than the other way around (ie. the stop motion creatures are part of the "real" world). Another qualifier is that the stop motion animation in the film does not necessarily try to look realistic or believable.

[edit] Main

What differentiates these from the category above is that here the stop-motion-animated characters/creatures are meant to be part of the real world, rather than the other way around (see: model animation). Stop-motion animation is used largely as a special effect. This should not be taken as a slight, however, as some of the greatest masters of stop-motion animation spent their whole lives trying to make their creatures look believable. Some of the great classics of cinema are in this section, though it should be noted that a great many B-movies are here as well.

[edit] Notable stop-motion shorts

This is a list of the more notable stop-motion short films. Notability is determined by winning an award at a film festival or major award ceremony. However, for American films before 1932 and non-American films before 1960, notability is determined by historical significance. This is because the world's first international animation festival was only created in 1960, and the Academy Award for Animated Short Film (created in 1932) only focused on American films until 1960.

If there is no Wikipedia page for the film, a link must be added which would verify that the film has won at least one award at a film festival (a link to a list of the film's awards at a website like IMDB.com would be sufficient. For example: [21]).

The number of wins and nominations listed here is not necessarily complete.
