List of cyberpunk works

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

The following is a list of works commonly ascribed to the cyberpunk genre of science fiction. While some of these works — such as Neuromancer and Blade Runner — have become accepted as archetypal examples of cyberpunk, the classification of others can be debated. Furthermore, it should be noted that works published after 1993 are increasingly likely to be labeled "postcyberpunk", a term first applied to Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.[1] Science-fiction theory, criticism, and fandom are all known for their contentious nature, just as SF writers are often celebrated for inventiveness. Consequently, all categorizations are likely to be incomplete, contested or provisional.

Several observers, including the SF writer David Brin, have commented that cyberpunk was not as original as the genre's boosters once claimed. Such works as Fritz Lang's movie Metropolis (1927) contain elements that a 21st-century viewer might call "cyberpunk", even though they predate the cyberpunk canon by many years. These works could be labeled cyberpunk's "precursors", but a causal connection is not always clear.

[edit] Music

  • Angelspit, Australian cyberpunk electro duo.[144]
  • Blade Runner OST by Vangelis [145]
  • Buck-Tick, a Japanese band who have released many cyberpunk influenced albums, most notable of which is Mona Lisa Overdrive (2003)[146]
  • Covenant, a Swedish electronic band. Their music is built around deep, droning tones and thundering rhythms that support dark songs focusing on science fictional and cyberpunk themes, such as Replicant and Painamplifier from Dreams of a Cryotank.[147]
  • Cyberpunk by Billy Idol (1993). One of very few albums that has been explicitly inspired by the cyberpunk genre and cyberculture of the early 90s.[148] Other aesthetics composing the album, including Idol's style of clothing, music videos, and special edition software released with the album, were also based on Idol's interpretation of cyberculture.[149][150][151] The album was neither a critical nor financial success, and polarized "cyberpunk" subcultures of the period.[152][153]
  • Fear Factory have released a few cyberpunk themed albums, notably Soul of a New Machine, Demanufacture and Obsolete. The albums form a trilogy whose concept is man vs. machine, and our over reliance on technology.[154]
  • Front Line Assembly[155] Songs and lyrics are heavily influenced by cyberpunk.
  • Haujobb [156] is a German musical project whose output has ranged drastically within the electronic music spectrum, from electro-industrial to IDM and techno. The name Haujobb originates from the film Blade Runner. In the film, skin-job is a slang term for replicants. In the German version of the film, this was translated to haut-job.
  • Headscan: Heavily influenced by the cyberpunk genre, particularly on the album Pattern Recognition which was named after the William Gibson novel of the same name.[157][158]
  • Left Spine Down, is a band that plays a mixture of industrial, metal, punk, and drum & bass. Their songs contain cyberpunk themes and lyrics.[159]
  • Outside by David Bowie paints a picture of a somewhat cyberpunk version of the year 1999.[160]
  • Psydoll are a Cyberpunk band. They formed in Tokyo in 1997 and incorporate Industrial and Electropop with cyberpunk imagery, musical and lyrical content.[161]
  • Queensrÿche, an American heavy metal band who used a lot of cyberpunk themes on their albums, most notably on Operation: Mindcrime (1988) and its sequel Operation: Mindcrime II (2006).[162]
  • Sigue Sigue Sputnik The themes and imagery in the band's songs were often influenced by futuristic, dystopian or post-apocalyptic films such as A Clockwork Orange, The Terminator, Blade Runner and the Mad Max trilogy. The futuristic, electronic sounds of the synth guitar helped to create Sputnik's new wave-cyberpunk sound.[163]
  • Transverse City by American singer/songwriter Warren Zevon,[164][165] "Heavily influenced by cyberpunk and futurist speculation, Transverse City shares the dispassion of science-fiction artists like William Gibson and Pat Cadigan. In the future of Zevon's musical vision, the world is winding down like a cheap watch and we'll all watch TV as we drown in our own industrial waste."[166]
  • Year Zero by Nine Inch Nails features cyberpunk themes.[167]
    • Year Zero Remixed (AKA Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D) is a collection of remixes of the Year Zero album.
