Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki is an online encyclopedia for information on the Star Wars fictional universe[1]—including information on all seven films, as well as the Expanded Universe. It is a more specialized and useful wiki created to be an extensive encyclopedia of the Star Wars universe,[2] and is almost entirely in-universe. The name Wookieepedia is a portmanteau of Wookiee and Encyclopedia, being a pun on the name of Wikipedia. The logo, too, is a visual pun showing the incomplete second Death Star as opposed to the 'jigsaw logo'.

[edit] History

Chad Barbry

Wookieepedia was conceived by Chad Barbry[2][3] and Steven Greenwood[4] and was launched on Friday March 4, 2005 under the hosting site Wikia. The site's first editors were mostly users of Wikipedia who were frustrated by the requirements of notability for an article there, and the ensuing debates over deletion of content. Most of the first articles were copied directly from Wikipedia under the GNU Free Documentation License, and any Star Wars articles deemed too minor for inclusion in Wikipedia (e.g. Order D6-66) are almost always transferred to Wookieepedia[citation needed], assuming they do not have an article there already.

In addition, certain sections of articles which had to remain out-of-universe to identify them as Star Wars articles on Wikipedia were "wookified" to fit the in-universe perspective of the wiki (for example, the removal of text like "is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe," removing the "(Star Wars)" disambiguation from links and so on). However, other sections of the wiki cover actors, artists, real-life companies, and culture in an out-of-universe perspective. Since its foundation, many more changes to the wiki's Manual of Style have been made.

Wookieepedia was the most visited wiki hosted by Wikia as of April 2005. On 2005-11-28 Wookieepedia was selected as the Sci Fi Channel's "Sci Fi Site of the Week."[5] In January 2006, the site was Wikia's featured wiki of the month.

As of February 14, 2009, the English language version of the wiki contains over 64,000 articles, making it the second-largest Wikia-hosted wiki in terms of article count, ahead of sites such as Uncyclopedia—a parody wiki, and Memory Alpha—a Star Trek wiki. Wikia also hosts Star Wars wikis in Bulgarian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, and Spanish. Wookieepedia also coordinates its efforts with the German language Jedipedia and the Polish language Biblioteka Ossus.
